WHAT DOES A NOTARY DO?

A Notary's duty is to screen the signers of important documents for their true identity, their willingness to sign without duress or intimidation & their awareness of the contents of the document or transaction. Some notarizations also require the Notary to put the signer under an oath, declaring under penalty of perjury that the information contained in a document is true & correct. Property deeds, wills & powers of attorney are examples of documents that commonly require a Notary.

WHY ARE NOTARIES & NOTARIZATIONS NECESSARY?

Through the process of notarization, Notaries deter fraud & establish that the signer knows what document they’re signing & that they’re a willing participant in the transaction.

WHAT TYPES OF IDENTIFICATIONS ARE ACCEPTABLE?

All signers MUST have a Government issued photo identification to present to the Notary. Examples of accepted forms of identification are as follows:

  1. Driver’s License or DMV ID Card

  2. US Passport

  3. US Military ID

  4. Foreign Passport stamped by the US Immigration & Naturalization Service

CAN I SIGN MY DOCUMENTS IN ADVANCE?

NO! You must sign your documents in the presence of the Notary.
